Eluru: Excise Minister K S Jawahar admitted that arrack manufacturing was going on illegally in some areas in the State and the officials will take stringent action to stop the arrack menace.
He said that steps being taken to make Andhra Pradesh an arrack-free State are yielding good results. Addressing a media conference at Zilla Parishad Guest House here on Friday evening, the Minister said that most of the villages have been made arrack-free villages in the State. If anyone complained about the illegal arrack manufacturing, action will be taken against those responsible within 12 hours.
He said that so far 98 per cent liquor shops which have been given permission and 92 per cent bars have been opened in the State. Another 12 files were being examined.
He stated that special task force teams have been established to curb illegal cultivation of ganja in 11 mandals of Visakhapatnam district and the cultivators are from other districts, he added. He said that 21 lakh ganja plants have been destroyed in the early stage.
Referring to the tourism development, he said Kovvur town would be developed as tourist centre at a cost of Rs 600 crore. Already temple tourism is being developed at the Godavari catchment areas and also water-based tourism is being encouraged in the area. Resorts construction has been taken up in the Godavari catchment area and various water sports are being introduced.
He said that it was identified that 1,000 Acres of barren lands in Godavari catchment area and this land would be developed by constructing resorts and restaurants to attract tourists.
The road between Kovvur and Polavaram would be developed at a cost of Rs 230 crore, he added. Business activities would improve in Kovvur, Polavaram, Pattiseema and other areas following the steps by the government to encourage tourism in the area.
The Minister said Kovvuru town would be developed as a greater tourism hub than Rajamahendravaram. He said that some people were creating chaos without proper knowledge on the sanctity of Goshpada Kshetram in Kovvuru.
