Visakhapatnam: Over 100 rape cases were registered in both the rural and urban areas during the past 10 months. In an average every month 10 women, including girls below 18 years, were raped.

The women organisations and parents of the girl students expressed their concern and demanded that the government take stringent action against the rapists. Surprisingly, in majority of the cases, the accused are much known persons to the victims.

According to the crime records, in Visakhapatnam city, 68 rape cases were registered in the present year, while 32 cases were registered in the rural. The police said that out of 100 cases, in 80 cases, the women and girls were sexually assaulted by the lovers, friends, colleagues and family members.

According to crime records, in 2015 as many as 126 cases were registered while in 2016 as many as 114 cases were registered. However, in the present year, in the past 10 months, 100 cases were registered in both the rural and city. Surprisingly, the auto-rickshaw drivers, who are engaged to pick-up and drop the college students, are also accused in number of cases.

“Influenced by alcohol, the youth are chasing the women and assaulting. Taking serious note on the issue, the government should ban the liquor immediately, secretary of AIDWA R Madhavi demanded. Though, the police arresting the accused they are being released on bail,” she lamented.
