Eluru: Superintendent of the Bhimavaram Area Government Hospital Dr M Veeraswamy conducted an inquiry into the incident of an newborn’s death due to lack of oxygen cylinder in the ambulance belonging to the government hospital.

It may be recalled that Ainapudi Soujanya of Settivarigudem in Chintalapudi mandal delivered a baby boy on Sunday during the early hours of November 22. The condition of the newborn became serious due to drinking of amniotic fluid.

On the advice of doctors, the newborn was taken in the government ambulance. However, the ambulance driver, A Ravi Kumar, did not check the oxygen cylinder in the vehicle and took the infant, along with the parents.

As the oxygen supply was exhausted in the cylinder, the driver returned back from Hanuman Junction to Eluru Hospital for a spare cylinder. However, the newborn was already died in the vehicle by the time he reached the hospital.

The inquiry officer recorded the statements of the newborn’s parents, relatives and the ambulance driver A Ravi Kumar. The newborn’s relative Teneji Jyothi alleged that due to the negligence of the hospital officials, they lost their baby boy. The relatives and parents alleged that it died due to the negligence of the officials who did not check the oxygen availability in cylinders.

The father of the newborn, Satish Kumar accused the driver of the ambulance of not checking availability of the oxygen in the cylinder. “From the starting of the ambulance, the driver did not even check the level of oxygen.

He was just talking over the mobile phone until the ambulance reached Vatlur village, five km from Eluru city. I checked the metre of the oxygen cylinder and told him that the supply was very low. Even then the driver did not care about it. After reaching Vatlur, the oxygen exhausted, he alleged.

He stated that the driver returned to Eluru Hospital later for the oxygen cylinder. After reaching the hospital, he asked us Rs 200 and did not allow us to take the newborn to the doctors. “After that, we took the newborn to the doctor who said that the baby was already dead.

My baby died due to the negligence of the ambulance driver,” he alleged. The inquiry officer took the driver’s statement also. Speaking on the occasion, inquiry officer Veeraswamy said he would submit the report to the District Coordinator of Health Services (DCHS) soon.
