With the coastal shipping began its operations from Visakhapatnam Port Trust, flower growers and merchants are in an upbeat mood. Besides the Visakhapatnam Container Terminal is providing air-conditioned facilities for exporting the most perishable goods. With these latest facilities, the fragrance of AP flowers will spread in the international markets particularly in the mid-east countries.

With the strong assurance of the government, farmers and trades established Sri Anjaneya Poola Varthaka Rythu Market and taken up the project at a cost of Rs 12 crore, which covers civil works, building, insulation, plant, machinery, electrical and generators.

The cost of the land was not included in the total project cost. The complete air-conditioned flower market will have cold storages, auction halls, digital display units, packing, modern trading facilities, retiring rooms, canteen and ATMs. Other infrastructure facilities will be provided to the gardens like roads and lighting to enhance transportation of flowers in shortest possible time to retain is freshness and fragrance, an official of the horticulture department said.

With an aim to creating modern wholesale market to give premium price to the farmers and reduce the damage of flowers during rainy season, the air-conditioned wholesale market is coming up in East Godavari district. “The project is designed to handle 40 mt per day in 2017 and 100 to 200 mt by 2025 per day. The flower auction mainly caters to the needs of growers around 10 to 50 km radius, surrounding the unit including Kadiyam, Rajamahendravaram, Nidadavolu, Ravulapalem, Anaparthi and around 10 to 15 mandals in East Godavari district.

The department sanctioned Rs 2.84 crore as subsidy and already Rs 1.42 crore was released to the society as a first instalment, Commissioner of Horticulture Chiranjiv Choudhary told The Hans India.

The market facility will begin its operations at the earliest. To improve the productivity of horticulture crops, the government has decided to promote farmers by providing potential markets across the country, the commissioner added.
