Minister for agriculture Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said that the government constituted a committee with three ministers to set up Cold Chain Corporation (CCC).
Rajamahendravaram: Minister for agriculture Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said that the government constituted a committee with three ministers to set up Cold Chain Corporation (CCC).
The minister laid foundation stone for agriculture college and hostel buildings in Katheru here on Sunday, coming up at an estimated cost of Rs 17 crore.
Later, addressing the gathering, the agriculture minister said the committee submits its report on how to construct cold storage units under the proposed CCC in the state. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was very particular in this regard as cold storage units would help farmers to
store their produce until they get a better price, he said.
The Chief Minister had underlined the need to make use of latest agri technology in pre and post-harvesting,” he added. Chandramohan Reddy said Andhra Pradesh was the only state extending full support to farming community in the country, having spent an amount of Rs 25,000 crore for farmer loan waiver scheme.
The government is purchasing paddy, turmeric, chilli and cotton on its own when the farmers are not getting minimum support price, he said. The Chief Minister asked the officials to take steps to increase area under horticulture crops to one crore acres this year as against of 41 lakh acres at present, he said.
“E-cropping system was introduced and 40 lakh soil test reports were issued to the farmers for their benefit. Microsoft founder Bill Gates came forward to extend necessary technical support to farmers through his foundation. Mega Seed Park is also coming up to supply quality seed to farmers in the state. There is a good demand for agriculture courses in the state and many girls are showing interest to join in them,” the minister explained.
Presiding over the programme, Rajamahendravaram rural MLA Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary appealed to the agriculture minister to sanction post-graduate courses in the agricultural college for which the minister responded positively.
MLCs R S Manyam, A A Rao, urban MLA Dr A S Narayana, GUDA chairman Ganni Krishna, Agriculture University vice-chancellor Dr Vallabhaneni Damodar Naidu, registrar Dr T C Satyanarayana, dean Dr T R Babu, associate dean Dr P Rambabu, faculty, students and others were present.
