Vijayawada: High drama continued from morning to evening at Gunadala here on Sunday when six students of Fathima Medical College, Kadapa, and one parent climbed the cell tower adjacent to the Eluru Road and threatened to commit suicide if the government failed to give a written assurance on accommodating the students in other medical colleges.

After several hours of drama, the students alighted from the tower with the help of NDRF teams after District Collector B Lakshmikantham has assured them that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu would meet them at Secretariat on Monday morning. They also received an assurance in this regard from officials from the Chief Minister’s office.

Fathima Medical College students began regularly taking part in dharna a month ago at Dharna Chowk here demanding justice. Earlier, the Medical Council of India had scrapped the admissions of the Fathima College students for the year 2015-16 due to lack of adequate facilities and poor infrastructure at the college.

Consequently, the students lost two academic years and have been seeking justice through relocation in other medical colleges in the State. Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham, Joint Commissioner of Police B Ramana Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kranti Rana Tata and other officials held discussions with the parents and some students throughout the day.

Earlier, six students including two girls and one parent climbed the cell tower at about 9.30 am and threatened to end their lives if the State government failed to give written assurance on relocating them in other medical colleges. They refused to come down from the tower till evening. A team of NDRF with 60 members, AP disaster response team with fire engine and 108 vehicle reached Gunadala and stayed till evening.

After many rounds of discussions, the students came down with the help extended by NDRF teams. The angry students and parents alleged that though they have been seeking justice for a long time there was no response from either Ministers or officials. The police arrested the YSRCP, CPM and Congress leaders who expressed solidarity with the students on Sunday and released them later.

CPM State Secretariat member Ch Baburao, YSRCP leader and former MLA Velampalli Srinivas, city Congress president Akula Srinivas and others expressed solidarity with the agitating students. They came down heavily on Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas alleging that the Minister had made false promises and never tried to solve the problems of the students.
