Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) is planning to conduct a mega Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) programme in Tirupati in the second week of December. After training 1,500 police in CPR earlier, they want to train the denizens on a massive scale. Commemorating its Silver Jubilee year, now SVIMS aims to train up 25,000 denizens in CPR.
CPR is an emergency procedure performed to maintain blood circulation and flow of oxygen to heart, brain and other vital organs of the body. This procedure is performed when a person is suffering from respiratory and cardiac arrest due to heart attack or heart stoppage from other reasons.
“This essential knowledge helps people to act effectively and efficiently during emergencies which in turn reduces the number of deaths”, says SVIMS director Dr TS Ravikumar. The country encouraged community CPR for common persons so that the bystanders could step in and perform CPR during emergencies.
This programme, named “Hands only CPR”, includes doing chest compressions manually to preserve heartbeat and brain functioning and does not involve inserting breathing tube or injecting medication.
According to the Director, “SVIMS has already trained up to 100 of its employees including doctors, nurses and other staff under the “Train the Trainers (TOT) programme” and these trained trainers will coordinate the community CPR programme”. Plans include training 100 more of its employees, so that the big group of 200 SVIMS trained personnel will provide skill training to public at large.
The programme is designed such that it will not interfere with the working hours of the employees. This training programme will commence in the 2nd week of December and will continue throughout the month. SVIMS employees will be trained first, followed by TTD employees.
Permission has been accorded by EO Anil Kumar Singhal to initiate this for TTD employees. SVIMS Director welcomes all organisations interested in their employee training for community CPR to call PRO office (0877-2287777, extn: 2432) or send e-mail to nodal officer Dr. Aloka Samantaray ([email protected]).
