The Minister inaugurated Maize Research Centre at Vijayarai village in Pedavegi mandal on Sunday. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the government has taken various steps to save farmers and instil confidence among them. Recently, the government has directed Kaveri Seeds Factory to pay Rs.2.90 crore compensation to the farmers who incurred losses due to spurious seeds supplied by the company.

The Minister said that the state government would establish a Seed Research Centre at a cost of Rs 1,700 crore with the collaboration of international companies. He said the Bill Gates Foundation would extend technical cooperation for soil testing through satellites.

He said recently concluded Agritech meeting at Visakhapatnam has achieved good results and several international companies have come forward to extend technical cooperation to the state.

He pointed out that Gujarat and Maharashtra are studying the loan waiver schemes as it was implemented in the state to benefit the lakhs of farmers. He said that the government is encouraging natural cultivation and 400 clusters have been identified in this connection.

Five lakh acres have been targeted to take up the natural farming. He said that Aziz Premji organisation has given Rs 100 crore to the state to encourage natural cultivation. The United Nations team has also agreed to give technical cooperation. Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said that the government will strengthen the National Oilpalm Research Centre in Pedavegi.

He said state secured first place in the maize production and Pedavegi bagged first place in seed production of maize. In view of the achievement, the government has selected Vijayarai to establish the Maize Research Centre. Eluru MP Maganti Venkateswara Rao urged the Minister to announce minimum support price to oil palm farmers.

Government Whip and Denduluru MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar said that farmers are incurring losses due to spurious seeds and asked the Minister to discuss and enact Seed Act.

Acharya NG Ranga Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor Vallabhaneni Damodara Naidu, Additional Joint Collector MH Sheriff, agriculture department joint director Gousia Begum, Maruteru Rice Research Centre principal scientist PV Satyanarayana participated in the meeting.
