2,150 CCTVs to monitor traffic violators in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam: As the traffic police department is on the job of upping the surveillance system in Visakhapatnam, the city of destiny would be completely under watchful eyes very soon.
The setting up of sophisticated 2,150 CCTV cameras at 50 busy junctions in the city will be a major deterrent to jumping traffic signals, triple riding, crime and other traffic violations, according to traffic police department.
While 1,660 CCTV cameras are being set up with the funds released by the DGP’s office as part of smart city project another 500 CCTVs cameras would also be installed.
“Among the 94 junctions situated in the city, 50 important locations have been selected to set up the cctv cameras. With this new facility, the surveillance through cctv cameras will be improved very much. Besides, it is possible to get data of traffic violators and their vehicles,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kinjarapu Prabhakar said while speaking to The Hans India here on Monday.
While the existing CCTV cameras have only zoom and shooting in 180 degrees options, the new ones have more advanced provisions. These ultra-modern CCTV not only identifies traffic signal jumpers but also sends the number plates information of vehicles to control room. Moreover, by using this information, it is also possible to issue challans in this new system.
Wherever the people gather in big numbers or move in large groups, the CCTVs alert the police personnel. Apart from this, new 46 traffic lights would be installed at several junctions. Of this, 18 are being set up with police department funds and the remaining with smart city project funds.
