Ongole: Students from Andhra Pradesh excelled in the national sport of Indonesia, Pencak Silat, in the open Pencak Silat championship held in Singapore and qualified for the next world championship.

Pencak Silat, is a martial art form said to be developed in India but spread in Indonesian countries. It has been gaining wide popularity in India in the recent times and is also listed for the Asian Games 2018, Asian Youth Games 2018 and Olympics 2024.

Purimitla Manoj Sai and his friends spread this game in India in 23 states and four Union territories and trains hundreds of students. About 60 players from India participated in the open Pencak Silat Champioship held last week in Singapore and won 22 medals including six gold and two silver medals.

An eight-member team from Andhra Pradesh including B Yashwant Raj, B Punit Chakravarthy Rathod, K Harshavardhan, P Girishvardhan, SP Sandeep, A Varshit and K Abhishikta are among the 60 candidates from India and won the six gold medals and one silver.

The team met the Ongole MLA Damacharla Janardhan on Monday and explained the details of the event. The MLA wished the students all the best and encouraged them to participate in more events and bring more medals to the home country.
