Visakhapatnam: On par with the Developed countries, India is equipped with the required technologies for predicting natural calamities and executing disasters management plans effectively, said Dr KG Ramesh, Director General of Indian Meteorological Department, at a conference on climate change held at Andhra University in the city on Monday.

The one-day conference on ‘Impact of Climate Change on Extreme Weather Events and Indian Ocean’ focused on the prevailing and emerging challenges at the coastal regions. Inaugurating the conference at TLN Sabha Hall at AU campus, Vice Chancellor G Nageshwar Rao felt man-made faults were the reason for so many disasters taking place.

IMD Director General Ramesh noted that coastal areas and cities were witnessing proliferation of population, making it tougher to tackle disasters. He said climate change would jeopardise the whole eco-system and pose a serious threat to every life. Science and Engineering Research Board – DST advisor P Sanjeev Rao was also present.
