Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC), which bagged 19th place among 500 cities and towns of India in ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ in 2016, is now trying to improve its position further. Talking to media in his chamber here on Monday, City Mayor Koneru Sridhar said the VMC ranked 19th among 500 cities in India in Swachh Bharat Mission and now was trying to improve its position by reaching top 10 in the country.

He said the VMC had spent Rs 21 crore to purchase machinery and equipment to keep the city clean and green. As part of the mission for 2017, the VMC is getting assistance from various government departments and corporations. The Swachh Andhra Pradesh Corporation has granted machinery worth Rs 21.40 crore to VMC this financial year. Experiments made by VMC by installing smart semi-under ground bins at two places at Ayodhya Nagar and Andhra Loyola college are giving fruitful results.

He said the VMC has decided to arrange 127 such garbage semi-underground bins across the city. Each bin costs Rs 16 lakh and it is very easy to lift and carry with heavy vehicles, he said. The VMC initially will install eight smart semi-underground dust bins in addition to two existing bins. Swachh Andhra Corporation will sanction funds to civic body to purchase 127 dust bins, he added.

The Mayor said the VMC would use sensors to get information on the condition of dustbins. The sensors attached to dustbins will pass information to VMC staff after filling the bins. The VMC staff is already using tables to get information on the condition of roads and dust bins. Now, censors will be added to mechanism to improve hygienic conditions of the city. Now, the sanitation staff gets information round-the-clock about the dustbins and clearing of garbage.

The Mayor said the VMC collects 550 tonnes of garbage every day, of which 350 metric tonnes form wet garbage, which can be used for production of organic manure. The VMC can sell the organic manure at Rs 10 per kg. Wet garbage is mainly collected from Rythu bazaars, vegetable markets and fruit markets.

The civic body gets Rs 95 crore income on property taxes and it is spending Rs110 crore for sanitation in the city. Expenditure is mainly incurred for payment of salaries, purchase and maintenance of machinery, diesel, purchase of spare parts and vehicle repairs.

The Swachh Andhra Corporation is extending financial assistance to the VMC. It has allotted two road sweeping machines each costing Rs1 crore, five small road sweeping machines each costing Rs 30 lakh, 37 small compact vehicles worth Rs 14.80 crore, five big compact vehicles valued at Rs 2.80 crore and other eight vehicles worth Rs 1.30 crore. The total cost of these machines is Rs 21.40 crore, the Mayor added.
