Visakhapatnam: With the recent meeting of experts from Air Force and Vice- Chancellor G Nageshwara Rao, setting up of Centre for Defence Studies proposal at Andhra University is in last stage of discussions and the centre is likely to come up.

This is the first-of-its kind Centre in the country outside the defence establishments.The university has come up with a proposal to the tune of Rs 70 crore. The Centre, supposedly, will engage in research and consultancy services in connection with the armed forces.

Following Andhra University Vice-Chancellor G Nageshwara Rao’s visit to the Armed Forces headquarters in New Delhi and Air Chief Marshal Birendra Singh Dhanoa’s visit to Andhra University, the pitch for setting up of a Defence Research Centre, a Defence Chair and an Air Force NCC wing at the varsity was made.

According to sources, the team that visited the university recently will apprise the Air Force chief about the academic excellence and infrastructure of the varsity. It is learnt that the Andhra University will get official confirmation from the Indian Air Force headquarters in New Delhi soon.

An expert team led by Air Marshal Sanjay Sharma and Vice-Air Marshal BK Sood came to the varsity on Monday. It is learnt that Air Force officers had evinced interest for establishment of the Centre for Defence Studies at the varsity.
