Vijayawada: The Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC) has restarted the preparations for the construction of Light Metro Project (LMP) in Vijayawada city. Initially, a detailed project report (DPR) would be prepared by an expert foreign consultancy for the LMP.

The AMRC had started works afresh after the cancellation of Metro Project by the state government due to financial and administrative reasons. The difference between Metro Project and Light Metro project is mode of construction and passenger capacity.

The LMP has passenger capacity of 200 to 220 only against the Metro Project’s passenger capacity of 250 to 300. Less number of passengers can be travelled in LMP compared to standard metro project, which are built in bigger cities. Now, fresh DPRs will be prepared by an expert European company for the LMP in Vijayawada.

The previous 450-page DPR has been scrapped due to cancellation of Metro Project by the state government. Now, the AMRC is redesigning the Metro Project with reduced cost and to fulfil the transport needs of denizens of Vijayawada. Two corridors on Eluru Road and MG Road will be built as usual under LMP but with less expenditure.

Tenders for allotment of works for preparation of DPR will be opened on November 30 in Germany. A German-based company KWF funding for DPR preparation. The KWF has shortlisted five companies for allotment of work, which may be completed in five months.

AMRC Managing Director N P Ramakrishna Reddy told The Hans India tenders will be opened on November 30 for allotment of works for preparation of DPR. Five companies in the fray to prepare the DPR.

Two French companies, Egis Rail SA and Systra of France, CPCS Transcom of Canada, GRE Gauff Railway of Germany and Rina consulting, Italy were shortlisted. One of these companies will be selected for the preparation of DPR, said Ramakrishna Reddy.

Now, the AMRC has opted LMP because it may be viable for smaller cities like Vijayawada. Earlier, Metro Project was estimated at Rs 7,000 crore. Now, the estimated cost of LMP is Rs 4,800 to Rs 5,500 crore due to construction of less passenger capacity corridors.

As per the latest proposals, capital cost of per km is estimated between Rs 190 and Rs 210 crore against the previous estimations of Rs 250 to Rs 300 crore per km made for Metro in Vijayawada.

Passenger car capacity is also reduced from 250 to 300 to 200-220 for LMP. If the passenger capacity reduces, the cost of construction will come down, said Ramakrishna Reddy. He said car attachments also slashed from maximum nine to only five as per the LMP.

Proposed speed for LMP was reduced to 30-35 km per hour from the earlier proposed speed of 30 to 40 km per hour, he said. Length of Eluru Road elevated corridor has been increased from 23 km to 33 km up to Gannavaram Airport.

Construction of Metro Station is a challenging task at Nidamanuru. Farmers are demanding Rs 10 to Rs 15 crore per acre of land. The AMRC needs about 60 acres land for construction of Metro. The state government is not willing to spend a huge amount for land acquisition.

Land prices are very less in Gannavaram compared to Nidamanuru. One acre of land costs Rs 2 to Rs 3 crore only. So, the AMRC is planning to construct the Metro Rail Station in Gannavaram. In this backdrop, the Eluru elevated corridor length has been increased by 10 km under the LMP.
