Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu on Thursday said that the state government is committed to bring down road accidents by 50 percent in the next six months.

Even though accidents on highways have come down sharply, the number of deaths in road mishaps failed to dip, he said. He was responding to the questions raised by the members in the AP legislative assembly during a Question Hour on road safety measures.

The Tirupati-Rajampet project is a pilot project which is being designed to avert road accidents by setting up safety measures. He further pointed out that the policemen, who used to patrol highways initially, are no where seem to be not visible anywhere on highways.

In the road accidents on highways, forty percent of the victims are youths which is an alarming trend, the Minister said.
