Visakhapatnam: Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command Vice-Admiral Karambir Singh said that the Navy is not only safe guarding the country and maritime interests but also reaching to the people by rendering service to the people.

Not only augmenting the fleet and other weapons, the navy has been extending its services to all kinds of emergences, not only in the country also at foreign countries, he added.

Addressing a media conference onboard the INS Kamorta on Friday, the Vice-Admiral said that the Indian Navy has been strengthening its arms by placing many warships. The Indian Navy presently has 198 war ships and 450 aircrafts, and the ships would be deployed as per the requirement of the commands, including the Western, Eastern and Andaman, he added.

As many as 34 war ships are under construction and all the ships are being constructed in Indian shipyards. The war-fighting capability of the Navy’s surface fleet has been augmented by induction of three indigenous Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes, two Water-Jet Fast Attack Crafts and two Landing Crafts this year, Karambir Singh said.

The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) was established on March 1, 1967 celebrating the Golden Jubilee year and in near future, the command would emerge as the biggest sea force in the Indian Ocean region.

“Modernisation of the submarine arm is underway. The INS Kalvari will be joining the fleet very soon. Measures are also underway to bolster the aviation arm of the Navy by induction of new fighters, surveillance aircraft and ship-borne helicopters.

Replying a question on the Indian Navy’s joint operations with Chinese Navy, Karambir Singh said Indian Navy and Chinese are operating together on the Gulf of Aden to thwart the piracy attempts against Indian bulk carrier.

The ENC has been clubbing hands with all the counties across the globe and participating in several joint operations and programmes, he added. To mark the Swarna Varsh celebrations of ENC, President would present the President Colour to the submarine arm on December 8, Karambir Singh said.
