Tirupati: “A qualified doctor should be fully committed to ethical principles and values for betterment of society. Doctoring is a lifelong commitment with learning and sharing knowledge,” stressed P Kunhikrishnan, Director, Satish Dhawan Space Centre, (SHAR) Sriharikota.

In his address at the 8th Convocation of Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS), Tirupati on Saturday, he underlined that. the word empathy and compassion should be the principle throughout doctors’ career.

He added that the internet of things and big data are making serious impact on every industry and healthcare industry is no exception. It is a field, which is now being called the medical internet of things, he added.

“Artificial Intelligence is another area which is encompassing the medical care. We have seen the advent of surgical robots which assist the surgeons as well as expert systems for generating alerts and reminders, diagnostic assistance, image recognition and interpretation, agents for information retrieval and so on,” he observed.

He added the space technology is always well ahead of their times and the research works carried out for access to space have resulted in spinoff benefits in many areas. Several spin-off technologies are either transferred or are being developed by ISRO in the medical field. He cited an example that the development of polyurethane (PU) foams for rocket motor applications has resulted in an important spin-off in the form of artificial foot prosthesis. ISRO has already transferred this technology for production after many field trials, he said and added the application of telemedicine through satellites has aided in improving the health environment, especially of poor in remote villages.

Director-cum-Vice Chancellor of SVIMS Dr TS Ravikumar, in his report, said the institution is scaling new heights and they have laid out a robust plan to mark the milestone of silver jubilee year. Presently, the institute has 1,763 students in its campus which is an all-time high. This year, 59 post-graduate students have joined the institute, he said and added in all, 348 students have received their degrees in the convocation. The Director mentioned their collaborations with ‘Best of Breed’ institutions across the globe. SVIMS is expanding its multi-organ transplant programme. As a novel initiative for women’s health in Rayalaseema, a ‘Pink Bus’ will be commissioned soon. SVIMS has also launched a programme of ‘Banking on Health’ under the strategy of ‘Hub to Hut’ with the partnership of SBI. Medical Council of India president Dr Jayshree Mehta and other members of executive board were present.
