Nellore: Railway passengers can cheer up now as the South Central Railway (SCR) provided much-awaited WI-FI facility at Nellore Railway Station. Authorities of RailTel Corporation of India Limited completed the project two months ago and passengers have been enjoying 2 GB usage. But the facility is yet to be launched officially.

RailTel authorities earlier announced that they would provide the facility to Tirupati, Vijayawada, Vizag, Guntur, Palasa, Rajahmundry, Kakinada, Nellore, Srikakulam Road, Bhimavaram, Samalkot Junction, Eluru, Satyasai Prasanti Nilayam, Anakapalle, Tuni and Vizianagaram railway stations. Nellore has been provided with the facility.

A-category stations in the State would get the connectivity in the current phase. Kadapa, Guntakal Junction, Renigunta Junction, Tenali Junction, Anantapur, Chirala, Gudur Junction, Ongole and Tadepalligudem would get the facility by end of this year. In Nellore district, Gudur junction has to be provided with the facility and officials said it would be completed shortly.

In fact, Google had come forward to provide high-speed public Wi-Fi service at around 100 railway stations across India by 2016 end among the 400 selected places. The project was announced in September 2015 by Google management and was launched in association with Railtel Corporation.

The railway authorities say wi-fi connectivity in railway stations will be useful for passengers who wait for trains. Waiting for a train is normally boring for passengers and they could activate internet for watching movies and playing online games.

In case of inordinate delays, they can log on to the website of the railways for information on running status of the train and other relevant information through internet on their mobiles.

“The connectivity by the RailTel Corporation has already been done and still to be formally launched. They arranged the equipment two months ago and they also tested the connectivity. Officials have to decide the launching plans,” said Anthony Jairaj, Station Superintendent, to the Hans India.
