Nine held for murdering witch during treasure hunt

Nellore: Gudur police on Saturday arrested 9 accused persons in a case related to the murder of a witch in Sydapuram mandal two years ago. According to Gudur DSP VS Rambabu, nine accused -BathalaRatnaiah of Jorepalli in Rapurmandal, Marella Nageswara Rao and J Venkata Ramana of Gandhinagar in Podalakur, Banala Gopi of Ramamandiram Street, Podalakur; Chintakayala Venkata Ratnam of MallammaGunta in Rapur, Nakka Sankaraiah of Gudur town, Tambi Ramesh of Vanamthopu in Nellore town, T Srinivasulu of Akkamambapuram in Rapurmandal, and Parimala Ramesh of Gandhinagar in Gudur town were teamed up for hunting expecting a hidden treasure at MarlapudiReserve Forest area in Sydapurammandal two years ago.

They engaged a JCB poclainer to dig a huge pit with a dimension of 20 feet length and 20 feet width in the area. They also took help from PitlaRathaiah for conducting witchcraft for obtaining the treasure. While Rathaiah was breaking a coconut at the pit, it broke vertically which was treated as a bad omen.

Venkata Ramana of the team had beaten him up brutally with a stone in which Rathaiah died on the spot. They planned to show the incident as an accident, brought the body to Tippireddypalli bus shelter and placed him on the main road. A vehicle hit the body and it was registered by the police as a suspicious death at that time.

Police subsequently apprehended Bathala Rathaiah who disclosed the episode behind death of the witch Pitla Rathaiah. Police arrested the other accused in the case on Saturday. They also seized the jeep used to shift the body of the witch Rathaiah. Senior police officials were present at the press meet.
