Visakhapatnam: People from the state need not go all the way to north India or Nepal to have a darshan of Rudraksha tree, considered sanctimonious by the devotees of Lord Siva.

AP too has one, on the premises of forest guest house in Araku Valley in the district. This Rudraksha tree is only one in Andhra Pradesh and is also yielding the most precious dry fruit ‘Trimukhi Rudraksha” (three face). Due to lack of proper publicity and conservation, this most important divine tree of Hindu culture is facing tough times to grow further.

According to botanists, though this tree is no need of special climatic conditions, its growth depends generally on the nature of soil compounds. However, Rudraksha trees are not growing in all the areas, except for a few places.

But the then conservator of forests, C N Rao in 1990 brought a sapling from Malaysia and planted it on the premises of the forest guesthouse in Araku Valley. The forest officer deployed special watchmen to protect the sapling in its initial stages . Later, the regular watchmen of the forest guesthouse took the responsibility of the tree.

Though there are Rudrakshas of different faces were mentioned in records, in India and Nepal nine-faced Rudrakshas are available mainly. Each face the dry fruit is having has its own values in both devotional and medicinal realm. The tree in Araku Valley is yielding Trimukhi Rudraksha (three-face), which is considered very precious as per the Hindu mythology. Normally, Pancha Mukhi Rudraksha is available at various places. However, at a very few places Yeka Mukhi (one face), Dwimukhi (two faces) and Trimukhi (three face) Rudrakshas are available and they are very costly too. People used to gift Rudraskha mala to their loved ones.

“I can’t remember clearly, but a forest officer who brought the sapling and planted it on the guesthouse premises. He used to inquire about the growth of the sapling during the early days.
