Visakhapatnam: The neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh have been pressuring the Centre to re-allot those projects assured to it due to lack of proper follow up from them in this regard.

The Steel Ministry had sanctioned Cold Rolled Coils steel plantworth Rs 6,000 crore to set up in Visakhapatnam. Announcing the project to the state, the Steel Ministry asked the AP government to send the proposals for setting up the unit in Visakhapatnam.

However, the state is yet to respond on the Centre’s proposal. While sanctioning the project, the Union Steel Ministry asked the State government to provide suitable land and sufficient power to the plant. According to sources, Visakhapatnam is suitable to set up the plant as all kinds of transportation facilities are available from the City of Destiny.

On condition of anonymity, a senior BJP leader said “Not only Cold Rolled Coils plant, the Narendra Modi government has also announced to set up an integrated steel plant in Kadapa. In fact, the Centre asked the State government to send proposals by February this year for setting up Cold Rolled Coils steel plant.

The government is ready to sanction more projects to boon the residual Andhra Pradesh. But, the State government is not gearing up its machinery to catch the opportunities. Except the construction of Amaravati and Polavaram project, the State government is not looking at any other projects.

In fact, the State government should pressurise the Centre for more projects. Some other states including Madhya Pradesh and Odisha have been asking the Centre to allot Cold Rolled Coils plant for them. But the Centre is keen to set up the plant in Visakhapatnam.”

Responding on the issue, the State government officials said that those projects are not new, and they were mentioned in Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill-2014.

“We have also received information that the Union Steel Ministry agreed to set up Cold Rolled Coils steel plant. As we are busy with various development programmes, we did not discuss the Union Steel Ministry’sproject with the Chief Minister. The State is now having surplus power, land and water to set up the project,” a senior official said.

When asked about the BJP leader’s comment on the State government, one of the minister said that the BJP leaders are trying to divert issues like Polavaram project by making such comments. “There are several administrative and protocol procedures to set up any establishment and they are aware and intentionally making such comments," the minister added.
