Visakhapatnam: One more international tourist destination is coming up in the city. The East Point Golf Club (EPGC) is being developed into an international level club to conduct national and international tournaments.

This 131-year-old Golf Club is only one in the state and the government has given 12.72 acres of land for further development of the club to attract the international golfers. The EPGC is also setting up of a Golf Academy soon to promote the budding golfers. With this, the present B-category park would be upgraded into an A-grade golf club.

The EPGC management is holding discussions with private agencies to finalise the designs for the development of the park. The EPGC is running the club with 1,100 members.

The club was established in 1884 in a leased land from the then zamindar of Cheemudu meant for relaxation of the then British Garrison Officers, the railway and civil officers. It is located on the picturesque area surrounded by hillocks. The club is adjacent to Mudasarlova reservoir which is another attraction.

“We are holding consultations with some designers. With the approval of the members, the designs would be finalised. The landscaping and other works are likely to be completed by 2020. The estimated cost of the development work is about Rs 4 crore,” Secretary of EPGC TS Varma told The Hans India.

In fact, the management has already promoting the budding golfers. On every Saturday, about 30 budding players are practising the golf in the club. The EPGC management has decided to kick-start an exclusive Golf Academy in the club.
