Vijayawada: The Ranji Trophy quarter final match between Delhi and Madhya Pradesh will be held at the picturesque Mulapadu grounds near Ibrahimpatnam in Krishna district from December 7 to 11.
The venue will host the first Ranji Trophy match in the state’s cricket history. The Andhra Cricket Association conducted several Ranji trophy matches at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium in Vijayawada city in the past under the supervision of the then secretary Nekkanati Venkata Rao.
Later, majority of the matches were allotted to Vishakapatnam and Anantapur. After a long period, the local ground is hosting national level official cricket tourney. Actually, one-day limited overs and T-20 match against West Indies women’s team was held in 2016 at the Mulapadu ground.
The BCCI selected Mulapadu as the venue for the match, as it has already hosted a two four-day unofficial Test matches between India ‘A’ and New Zealand ‘A’ in October. India ‘A’ won both the matches convincingly.
Delhi team led by young wicket keeper Rishab Pant and coached by KP Bhaskar Pillai will stay at Hotel DV Manor while the Devender Bundela –led MP team stays at Fortune Murali Park.
Former Indian opener Gautham Gambhir and Unmukt Chand, assistant coach Manoj Prabhakar are some of the known faces in the Delhi squad.
Meanwhile, BCCI’s South Zone curator Sriram has arrived to oversee the ground preparation along with local curator A Yella Rao.
“We are providing a strip with a good dose of grass. For the first two days the strip will be helpful to the medium paces and later on it will gradually help the spinners,” said ACA curator Yella Rao. He said the outfield was meticulously mowed by using the mechanical cutters to help the ball to travel fast.
The match will feature an Australian umpire officiating along his Indian counterpart. “There is an understating between BCCI and Cricket Australia to help umpires enhance their knowledge by officiating in domestic fixtures,” said Andhra Cricket Association secretary Ch Arun Kumar.
