Vijayawada: The murder of a rowdy sheeter in broad daylight at Machavaram on Eluru Road sent shockwaves in the city. Rowdy-sheeter Vemuri Subramanyam alias Kalidasu Subramanyam (Subbu) was hacked to death with lethal weapons by unknown persons when he was standing in front a fast food centre near Eluru Road on Wednesday at 11 am. Subramanyam was one of the notorious rowdies in Tenali and he was expelled by Tenali police two years ago.

Since then, he had been living at RR Pet in Vijayawada with his wife and two children. His murder had shocked the denizens because there are no political murders in the city in the recent past. The murder created a commotion in the city.

The victim Subramanyam was arrested on several occasions in Tenali in connection with many offences. He went to Tenali one week ago to attend a court case and was murdered in Vijayawada within a week.

On Wednesday morning, he was hacked to death by unidentified persons who came on two two-wheelers. The incident took place at the entrance of Cherukuri Ramabrahmam street at Machavaram under Machavaram police station limits.

According to Machavaram police, six persons were involved in the murder. Panicked with the murder, traders near the canteen downed their shutters and left the area. He came out of the jail on bail one week ago.

The victim had personal rivalry with YSRCP leader of Tenali town Gaddedi Surendra. Subramanyam was also the prime accused in the murder case of YSRCP leader Medisetty Krishna who was hacked to death two years ago in Tenali. He was also facing many other criminal charges in connection with offences and murders in Tenali.

Vijayawada Task Force Assistant Commissioner of Police P Muralidhar told The Hans India that no case was registered against Subramanyam as he was rowdy sheeter in Tenali and he was accused in a murder case in Tenali.

Vijayawada DCP Gajarao Bhupal, who inspected the murder spot, told media persons that the police launched a probe into the case and hoped that the culprits would be arrested soon. Subramanyam is survived by wife and two children. Machavaram Circle inspector Umamaheswara Rao and police visited the spot.

The body was shifted to the Government Hospital for post-mortem. Meanwhile, Subramanyam’s wife Vemuri Durga alleged the role of a TDP leader in the murder. She told that the leader had exerted pressure on her husband to murder some persons but he refused to do so.

Hence, he nursed a grudge against him and finally killed him. She demanded that the police conduct an inquiry into the murder and arrest the culprits.
