Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) will mobilise public opinion for finalising the designs for the City Square project which would be constructed on the premises of Swarajya Maidan. The civic body launched a website and created Facebook and Twitter accounts to gather the public opinion. It may be recalled the state government is keen on constructing the City Square as an entertainment and commercial zone on a stretch of 32 acres.

Addressing a media conference at his chambers here on Tuesday, Municipal Commissioner J Nivas said that a total of four designs of the City Square were kept on social media and denizens could elicit their opinion on the choice to be made. He said that the City Square would provide recreation and entertainment to the denizens.

Referring to the problem of pollution, he said the VMC signed an MoU with the Road Transport Authority (RTA) to check the vehicular pollution in the city. He said if people find vehicles emitting heavy smoke, they could lodge a complaint with the call centre ‘103’ of the corporation. He said that the transport department would take action against the owner of the vehicle which emits high level of pollution.

He said arrangements have been made to connect the corporation with the transport department. He said that the pollution levels were gradually on the rise in the city and felt it should be checked. Referring to the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’, he said that a central team would visit the city soon to study the cleanliness and hygiene and submit a report to the government.
