Tirupati: Students’ unions staged protests in temple city on Wednesday over the suicide of Narayana Junior College student Harsha. He had committed suicide by hanging in the hostel. The corporate colleges remained closed after student unions gave bandh call on Wednesday, demanding probe into the death of Harsha.

Leaders of students’ unions and Harsha mother Chandrakala organised a dharna in front of post-mortem room in SV Ruia Hospital here. They sought a detailed investigation into series of suicides in the Narayana Junior Colleges in pilgrim city in the last 5 months. They demanded the State government to cancel the recognition of Colleges in the State.

Later, the police sent Chandrakala along with her son’s body to her native place B Kothakota forcefully. The SFI city unit staged a protest in front of the Regional Intermediate Office and raised slogans seeking cancelation of recognition given to Narayana Junior College. They alleged faculty members are humiliating the students, who have secured less marks in weekend tests.

“Municipal Minister Narayana should be sacked from the cabinet,” they demanded. Regional Inspection Officer Krishnaiah assured the leaders of students’ unions to take action against the college management and to set up a high-level committee to probe the suicide of Harsha. Urban police deployed cops in front of all Narayana Junior Colleges to avoid untowardincidents.
