Kurnool: The residents Housing Board in Nandikotkur town, in large number, organised a road blockade on Wednesday, demanding the halting of lorries belonging to the Jindal Cements. Two days ago, a lorry of Jindal factory has crushed an elderly person to death, besides injuring another person while they were having a morning stroll. With the road blockade, a tense situation prevailed for some time.

Speaking on the occasion, Super Bazar Chairman Yarramatam Mallikarjuna Reddy demanded the government that lorries should be prevented from plying between Nandyal and Midthur during the morning hours as several educational institutions are situated on the road.

If the lorries are allowed to ply, more number of accidents would take place, he added. Moreover, there are no speed breakers set up on the road to minimise the speed. He demanded the officials concerned to set up speed breakers. On learning about the tense situation, the police rushed to the spot and calmed the frayed tempers.

Sub- Inspector Lakshmi Narayana said that he would ensure that the lorries would be diverted to some other route instead of entering local habitations. With this assurance, the residents of Housing Board gave up the protest and dispersed.
