Visakhapatnam: An awareness campaign on ‘Services of transport department-licensing procedures’ was organised by transport department for 400 youth at Skill Development Institute on Thursday.

Addressing the youth, deputy transport commissioner S Venkateswara Rao disclosed that every year thousands of people are losing their lives in road accidents and majority of them are youth.

The main reason is due to lack of awareness on traffic rules, condition of vehicles and careless attitude, he pointed out. The DTC reiterated that as per the new rules, the driver as well as the owner of the vehicle is also liable for jail term, if they are caught driving without driving licence.

He cautioned that about 40 per cent youth in the age group 18 to 25 years are driving vehicles without licences and already more than 300 such persons in the state were awarded jail term.

On an experimental basis, the state government eased the procedure by issuing online learner’s licences by going to institutes, colleges,
universities, mass gathering areas and upon its success, the same would be implemented across the state, Rao said.

President of District Consumers Forum K Venkataramana complimented the efforts of the government and DTC in striving to bring transparency and accountability in the department. The doubts of the candidates were clarified on the spot. Institute in-charge CVN Das and faculty Sasibhusahan were present.
