Tirupati: The residents of merged panchayats with the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) are forced to ride on bumpy roads as they were not repaired after digging for laying drinking water pipelines. The MCT has taken up the works of laying new water pipelines for supplying drinking water to merged panchayats with Rs 80 crore sanctioned under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

Five years ago, panchayats like MR Palle, Thimminaidupalem and Rajivnagar were merged with the civic body. But, there are no pipelines for supplying drinking water to the merged localities. At present, the Telugu Ganga water is being supplied to those colonies through the network available within the old city.

The MCT is unable to supply drinking water for more than 2 lakh houses from the total population of 5.5 lakh due to lack of infrastructure. The MCT engineering officials are laying 18 km pipeline from Mangalam filter bed to merged panchayats to supply Telugu Ganga water. Besides, the civic body has taken up laying 140 km long sub pipelines in the merged colonies.

The existing metal water pipelines were replaced with new black PVC pipes. In addition, the MCT officials have been constructing four big water storage tanks with AMRUT funds. Objective of laying new water pipeline network is to prevent the water theft, wastage and inequity of water supply to domestic users.

Additional features of this project are fit the water metres to domestic and commercial water tap connections so that officials can audit the water usage and wastage every day. One more main advantage of laying new pipelines is officials can regulate the water supply from Command Control Centre near municipal park.

The civic body had dug the roads in the merged panchayats in the last one month. But, the MCT failed to repair the roads which were dug for laying pipelines. It is causing inconvenience to residents to ride bikes and four-wheelers on the damaged roads.

The civic body officials did not take the action on the complaints of residents. Speaking to The Hans India, municipal engineer Chandrasekhar said that the civic body has instructed the contractor to repair the roads which were dug.
