After successful linking of Krishna and Godavari rivers, the Andhra Pradesh government is taking steps for interlinking Godavari- Penna rivers.
Amaravati: After successful linking of Krishna and Godavari rivers, the Andhra Pradesh government is taking steps for interlinking Godavari- Penna rivers.
Water and Power Consultancy Services (India) Limited (WAPCOS), a consultancy organisation and public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Water Resources, estimated that Rs 80,000 crore is required for diverting Godavari floodwater to the Penna river which would benefit six districts of Andhra Pradesh.
Principal Secretary to Water Resource Department Sashibhshan Kumar told The Hans India that the Chief Minister suggested WAPCOS consultants that the plans on linking Godavari-Penna should be cost-effective and low-hanging fruit.
Chief Minister held a meeting with officials of water resources department and consultants of WAPCOS, who made a brief presentation, at Secretariat on Friday. The Chief Minister said the project was aimed to address the drinking water, irrigation and industrial water needs in Prakasam, Nellore in coastal area and four districts in Rayalaseema region.
As per the presentation of the WAPCOS, 320 tmc ft of surplus water can be diverted from Godavari to Penna through lift irrigation schemes for which 3,625 megawatts of power is required. Besides, 25,000 acres of land and 7,000 acres of forest land are to be acquired for the project.
Sashibushan Kumar said Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and hydrographic survey has been completed on the project a few days ago and a geo-technical survey is under progress.
As per the plan, the Godavari water could be diverted from Prakasam barrage in Vijayawada through Kommamuru canal to Pada Ganjam in Prakasam district. From there water will reach Gundlakamma reservoir and Sangam barrage in Nellore district.
The CM suggested the officials to complete study on diverting water through canals and reservoirs under Phase 1 and works can be taken up under Phase 2. “A report in this regard will be submitted to the Chief Minister after December 22,” the principal secretary said.
New barrage at Vykuntapuram
The state government is also considering to build a new barrage at Vykuntapuram, 60 km downstream of Pulichintala and 23 km upstream of Prakasam barrage, at an estimated cost of Rs 3,278.60 crore and it could take three years for completion.
Gadkari visit
Chief Minister said Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari would visit Polavaram project on December 23. He directed officials to be ready with a detailed report on interlinking of Godavari- Penna rivers to be submitted to the Union
Minister.
