Visakhapatnam: The Special Secretary (Logistics), Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Binoy Kumar, along with the Director, Department of Commerce, Aman Sharma, paid a visit to Visakhapatnam Port on Friday in connection with exploring various issues to reduce logistic costs and improve efficiency in the shipping sector.

Later, he convened a meeting with all the stakeholders and regulatory agencies. Interacting with the officials, Chairman of VPT MT Krishna Babu stated that logistics is very important sector for overall economic growth of the country and improving logistics would reduce the cost.

All the regulatory agencies, Public Sector Undertakings, along with railways, customs, ports and various agencies, involved in the port sector should coordinate in developing the economy of the country.

The prestigious Sagarmala Project would facilitate improvement of connectivity and modernisation for sustainable development of the country, he added. The Chairman informed that the customs, port and all other regulatory agencies can work together on a common platform for the use of the portal by stakeholders for uploading the information of vessels so as to get clearance at all levels from the point of vessel berthing to dispatch of vessel in all respects seamlessly.

The VPT invested Rs 3,000 crore for modernisation of berths in the last five years for complete mechanisation and to ensure OSBD improvement of international standards and to create in promoting quicker handling of cargo, including environmental management.

The VPT is the only major port with the deepest draft of 18.1 metres, Krishna Babu explained. Binoy Kumar informed that Centre is taking special interest on improvement of logistics in the recent years and to ensure reduction of cost for better economic growth.

The government would help the stakeholders and trade in carrying out the works more efficiently and requested the trade representatives to give their ideas, feedback for further improvement of the economy of the country.
