Eluru: Alleged negligence of a doctor has claimed two lives in a private hospital here on Monday. The incident sparked tension at the hospital in Ramachandra Raopeta area in the city following the agitation by the relatives of the victims.

Thota Prasanna Lakshmi of Western Street in Eluru admitted in Mahalakshmi Hospital of Dr Nirmala Devi for delivery and she delivered a boy in the hospital. However, as there was no equipment and oxygen facility, the infant died in the hospital. Later, the mother Prasanna Lakshmi’s condition deteriorated, and the doctor told the relatives to take her to another hospital.

When the relatives took her to Andhra Hospital where she was declared dead. Listening the death information of Prasanna Lakshmi, the relatives and family members started agitation at the hospital of Dr Nirmala Devi. As the road was packed with the relatives of the deceased, police reached the area and tried to control the relatives. The doctor Nirmala Devi did not turn up to hospital until 8.00 pm.

Meanwhile, Kunapareddy Radhakrishna of Western Street of Eluru in his complaint to the police stated that his younger sister Prasanna Lakshmi got married to Thota Lakshminarayana of Hyderabad. After marriage both the couple reached Eluru city and living with Radhakrishna. As Lakshminarayana’s wife Thota Prasanna Lakshmi (34) got pregnancy, she went to Mahalakshmi Hospital of Dr B Nirmala Devi for checkup.

Three days back also she went for a checkup and the doctor told Prasanna Lakshmi that within two days she may deliver. On Sunday night around 9.30 pm, Prasanna Lakshmi suffered from bleeding and called the doctor. The doctor asked her to come to the hospital. When they reached the hospital, the staff told them that the doctor is not in the hospital.

Around 11.30 pm the doctor came in and checked Prasanna Lakshmi and told the relatives that she will have a free delivery and admitted her in the hospital. On Monday morning as labour pains started, the doctor took her to the operation theatre. When the relatives asked the staff, who came out of the theatre after one hour, they told that an infant was born and died. With an anxiety and fear the family members asked the staff about the safety of the mother. The staff told them that she was alright.

At 10.30 am, the doctor came out of the theatre and replied with negligence and asked the relatives to take her to another hospital. The relatives took the patient to Andhra Hospital, where the doctors declared that her pulse is not responding. After one hour, she died at Andhra hospital.

Kunapureddy Radhakrishna, the brother of deceased alleged that due to negligence of Dr Nirmala Devi, his sister and infant died. He demanded action against the doctor.
