Addressing the media at the project site, he has said that the works at the Polavaram Project are progressing briskly and the main works in the project diaphragm wall construction would be completed by May next year. The L & T, Bavar Companies have completed 800 metres width works of the diaphragm walls. The concrete works of the spillway are to be speeded up. Approach channel, spill channel works also should speed up, he said.

Uma Maheswara Rao Rao said that during digging large quantities of earth rock will be available and this would be useful to take up the cofferdam and earth-cum-rockfill dam construction. The Minister said that Union Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari, along with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, will visit Polavaram on December 23 and arrangements are being made for the tour.

A photo exhibition at the spillway would be arranged to explain the Union Minister on the ongoing works. Gadkari will inspect the works at the project, he added. He hoped that the project works would be speeded up after the Gadkari’s visit.

The Minister directed that the engineers, who were involved in the project works, to reside in the workplace and quarters are there for their accommodation. The National Hydro Power Corporation would suggest on the upper cofferdam construction.

The Central Water Commission (CWC), Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) Union water resources officials and the Chief Minister are discussing on the speedy completion of the project, Rao said. He said that the bills related to the land acquisition and relief and rehabilitation programmes have been submitted to PPA on Monday and the PPA would submit it to the Centre.

The vacancies in the Engineering wing of water resources would be filled up soon. Already, 528 AEE posts have been filled recently in the department. Engineer-in-Chief M Venkateswara Rao, Polavaram SE VS Ramesh Babu and others accompanied the Minister.
