Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) Vice-Chancellor (V-C) A Damodaram said that the SVU is hosting a five-day south zone inter-varsity tennis tournament which will begin from December 19. Addressing the media in his chamber, the V-C informed that the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has been conducting zonal and national-level sport meet for students of universities every year.

This year, more than 250 tennis players representing 51 universities belonging to Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are participating in inter-varsity tennis contest, the V-C added.

The SVU made elaborate arrangements on varsity campus for holding tennis contest. DSP Ram Kumar, who won gold medal in tennis doubles at World Police Games 2017, will be inaugurating tournament at 8 am on Tuesday at tennis courts in the SVU.

He stated varsity’s Physical Education department has readied new tennis courts for tournament. “We will be using services of physical education staff of other universities for the tennis meet,” he added.

As part of sports policy, the SVU encouraging students by awarding cash prizes, Damodaram said adding the SVU will reward Rs 1 lakh cash if any student gets medal in international sports meet. SVU Rector Macha Bhaskar, Physical Education Director Krishnamurthy, Assistant Director A Giridhar and other staff were present.
