Visakhapatnam: The crime rate has been reduced with sharing of information between allied and line departments in Visakhapatnam district, disclosed Deputy Inspector General of Police (Vizag Range) Ch Srikanth.

Participating in an annual review meeting with the Visakhapatnam (Rural) police in the city on Tuesday, where he was the chief guest, the DIG said that the police department has to be ready to face new challenges with rapid industrialisation taking place in the district.

The police must have interacted with the revenue department to maintain law and order in the district. An action plan should also be drafted expecting the most possible reasons which create law and order disturbances, Srikanth informed the police.

While taking new steps to ensure that road accidents do not take place, the DIG said that special drives should be launched to minimise road accidents.

“Now as the constables and home guards are also highly educated, they should be polite and courteous while interacting with the public. The police must become more people-friendly to maintain the department’s prestige,” Srikant added.

While presiding over the meeting, Superintendent of Police Visakhapatnam Rural Rahul Dev Sharma said that with the help of modern technology, the number of road accidents have been controlled when compared to last year. More number of special drives were initiated to destroy ganja crops and LHMS was implemented to put down burglaries, the SP added.

Deputy Traffic Commissioner (DTC) S Venkateshwara Rao explained how the road accidents have come down in the district. The DTC said that with the collective efforts of the police and other departments, the Visakhapatnam district stood in the first place among the 13 districts in minimising road accidents.

Superintendent of Prohibition and Excise SIIN Bobjee Rao said that with the awareness programmes and ‘kala jatha’, the department with the support of the police successfully explained the tribals about the dangers of ganja cultivation and supporting the smugglers.

Gita Madhuri of the forensic department, Prof Ramakrishna of the Andhra Medical College and several public prosecutors also spoke. All the additional SPs, DSPs, Circle-Inspectors in the district were present.

Later, all the senior police officers went to the district firing range office at Kailasagiri and participated in the firing of various weapons.
