The US and China are spending 125 and 5.6 times more than India on health care of the people in their respective countries, said Dr UV Somayajulu, President of Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP).

Visakhapatnam: The US and China are spending 125 and 5.6 times more than India on health care of the people in their respective countries, said Dr UV Somayajulu, President of Indian Association for the Study of Population (IASP).

He noted that Indians met more than 62 per cent of their health expenses from personal savings called ‘out-of-pocket-savings, compared to 13.4 per cent in the US and 10 per cent in the UK.

Somayajulu delivered the presidential address of IASP’s 38th annual conference on ‘Population, Health and Development: Progress and Concerns’ being organised jointly by the Andhra University’s Department of Statistics and IASP at Platinum Jubilee here on Wednesday.

The three-day international conference was inaugurated by Andhra University Rector K Gayatri Devi. Speaking on the occasion, she said girl education has been playing a vital role in the country’s development.

According to government health and family welfare statistics, Dr UV Somayajulu noted: “Comparing Ïndia with China and the US in terms of number of hospital beds and nurses is not justified.

Our country has 81 per cent shortage of specialists at rural community health centres (CHCs), while the private sector accounts for 63 per cent of hospital beds.”

The prime objective of this seminar is to provide a platform for a scientific discussion on important issues relating to population and linkage with health and development.

The intention is to enable knowledge and experience sharing among the population scientists working on these issues and also provide a critical review of various policies and programmes so as to provide an agenda for future policy initiatives, according to Prof K Srinivasa Rao, General Chair, Department of Statistics.

Andhra University Science College Principal T Vinod Rao, IASP Secretary Dr P Mohan Chandra Nair, Suresh Sarma and others participated.
