Tirupati: Sri Padmavathi Mahila Visvavidyalayam (SPMVV) Rector Prof V Uma gave a call to men and women to fight unitedly for gender equality. The Rector participated as chief guest for the three-day workshop on “Role of Men and Boys in Gender Equality”, sponsored by Association of Commonwealth Universities. It was organised by the department of Women’s Studies of SPMVV on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Uma observed that issues related to gender equality should be made as public agenda. Hence, women have to work and fight for the redressal also as it is their problem, and nobody will come and work for them, she stated. She added that the gender issues have been widely recognised as women’s issues and are of no concern to men and boys and that belief can no longer be exist.

The role of men, boys and women are equally important in bringing gender equality. EKTA Resource Centre Director Madurai Bimla Chandrasekhar, who delivered keynote address has said that, gender equality doesn’t mean favouring women and talking about them only. It is talking about both men and women and their relationships that have been built in this society.

The work participation of women was declining may be due to the error in the process of counting the productive work of women which needs to be changed. Unless, safety net is provided to women their participation will not increase in the work participation, he added.

The in-charge Dean of School of Social Science Prof T Bharathi said that women were efficiently handling both house chores and their profession whereas men were dealing with profession only.

The gender equality can be achieved when wife and husband can share their responsibilities in all matters.
