Tirupati: Tirumala Tirupati Devesthanams (TTD) engineering department commenced wire netting technology works as per the recommendations of IIT civil engineering experts from November 16 to prevent landsides on second ghat road in Tirumala.

It may be noted that landslides on ghat road are common phenomenon during every rainy season. The cascading water from various directions on the hill slopes before it forms into small stream triggers landslides. The second ghat road runs steep from 11 km to 17 km and is prone to landslides.

The road was laid by cutting the slope on the hills, leaving fractured rocks at many points piercing through rock formations. This is the crux of problem as any slight disturbance caused by rains results in the falling of boulders or rocks. Currently, Indore-based PERROW cement construction company has started wire netting (anchoring) technology works on hills at 15 km of second ghat road.

TTD engineers had identified four locations which are vulnerable for pilgrims’ vehicles moving towards Tirumala. The TTD engineering department handed over these four locations to PERROW company for strengthening the loose soil at a cost of Rs 80 lakh within six months. From road level to 20 meters height on hills, the Indore-based company rock climbers and engineers are wire netting hill rocks.

TTD Superintendent Engineer Ramachandra Reddy said the second ghat road is very problematic for vehicular traffic in rainy season. He added as per TTD technical advisers team, Prof Narasimha Rao and Prof KS Rao, noted civil engineers from IIT Chennai and Delhi, recommendations, the strengthening of hill rocks has taken up for the first time using wire netting technology on Tirumala hills.
