Amaravati: The proposed visit of Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari to Polavaram Project on December 23 has been postponed. Official sources said the Union Minister may visit the State on December 27 as President Ram Nath Kovind is also visiting the State on that day.

The State government is waiting for Gadkari’s visit as several issues pertaining to the project need to be resolved including entrusting of some works relating to spillway and spill channel, construction of cofferdam, release of funds and clearance for revised estimates.

After a meeting with State Water Resources Minister Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao on December 6, the Union Minister made it clear that he would come and check the progress of works of Polavaram Project once every 15 days.

Gadkari also met State irrigation department officials and members of Polavaram Project Authority (PPA) in New Delhi on Tuesday and asked suggestions to increase the speed of works.

The Minister met AP BJP leaders and assured them that he was committed to meet the deadline of pushing water into canals through gravity by 2018.
