Visakhapatnam: In the context of increasing environmental problems and climate change, Green Climate has been coming up with 'Environmental Days Calendar' every year to create awareness among people and students. The environment calendar of 2018 was launched at Public Library, Dwarakanagar here on Friday.

Scientists clearly predict that increase of CO2 levels in atmosphere would create further weather imbalances on the globe and trigger immense calamities putting us in jeopardy, said former Vice-Chancellor of Dravidian University KS Chalam.

Society is in ‘Now or Never’ situation when it comes to taking up environmental protection campaign seriously, he pointed out. In this context, Green Climate team has come forward with preparation of environmental calendar which helps to observe various environmental issue-based days put forward by United Nations, countries and global agencies.

Green environment calendar was brought out in Telugu and English. Former Vice-Chancellor of Acharya Nagarjuna University V Bala Mohan Das said it would be helpful for various educational institutions to create awareness about the global scenario in connection with climate change and global warming. Besides, it also helps to carry out local campaign and action programmes for the protection of environment, he said.

Prof of Environment Department of Andhra University PVV Prasada Rao said as per a study by IUCN in India during 2000, there were 210 endangered species in our country as well as 244 plants were on the verge of extinction in Indian sub-continent.

Andhra University Zoology Department Prof Ch Manjulatha said that every year nearly 170 hectares of forest was being destroyed worldwide in the name of development. “If this continues further we would lose our forest lands within 30 years from now,” she noted.

Dr S Vijaya Kumar, founder-president of Paryavarana MargadarsiVaisakhi, and chairman of Vijay Nirman Company MG Madhava Babu, engineer of Andhra University and P Ratna Latha from Green Face Organisation spoke on the occasion.

Environmentalist Ramgopal, Siva Rama Prasad, GESS president PV Sirisha, members of Paryavarana Margadarsi Vaisakhi, J Rajeswari, K Ragasudha, G Sushma and others attended.
