Srikakulam: Failure of effective marketing mechanism is leading to inordinate fluctuations in prices of essentials particularly tamarind and onions.
Irregular increase and unreasonable fall of prices was reported at open market and Rythu Bazars as well.

Due to lack of supervision over prices of essentials by the marketing and civil supplies officials, fluctuation in prices was reported.

The price of tamarind without seeds is Rs 200 per kg, while with seeds is Rs 160 in open market. At Rythu Bazars, the price of seedless variety is Rs 130 and with seeds is Rs 100.

“The price of tamarind was soaring due to shortage of produce and it may increase further,” said J Jagan, a tamarind seller at Rythu Bazar here, who is a native of Deepavali village in Gara mandal.

“Price for kg onion in open market is Rs 42 and Rs 38 at Rythu Bazar. Earlier, it reached Rs 70 at open market and Rs 60 in Rythu Bazars. Due to scarcity of onion produce, prices had been increased earlier, and now it is reducing,” said onion farmer and seller Golivi Malleswara Rao of Pudivalasa village in Etcherla mandal.
