The delay in the project works, alleged misappropriation of funds allocated by the union government and the dissatisfaction over Andhra Pradesh government's attempt to change the contract agency had given ample indication that the centre is likely to take the responsibility of completing the project.

Though Polavaram was declared as national project, state government has taken up the responsibility of construction of the project. However, the works were moving at snail pace as the state held the delay in the release of funds was the main reason.

The other major controversy surrounded the project was the government has decided to replace the existing contract agency with new one on the grounds that the agency was not up to the mark in executing the works.

The reports prepared by central officials disclosed the state government escalated the estimations and also handed over sub contract works to other agencies without any departmental approvals. Union Minister for Water Resources Nithin Gadkari also expressed unhappiness on the whole episode.

Centre already put on hold the construction of Coffar dam and other works based on a report submitted by the official teams. Amidst the prevailing uncertainty, the centre is planning to take up works through Polavaram Project Authority. Before that, the union minister along with an official team will visit the project and ascertain the situation at ground level.

Official said several officials teams will visit Andhra Pradesh and hold talks with the government on the project in January.
