Vijayawada: Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has decided to take stern action against the junior colleges which are found harassing students leading to suicides. The board will not only levy penalty against such colleges but also scrap their registration based on the level of harassment and inquiry report submitted by the officials.
The board is also receiving complaints from students over the toll-free number 1800 274 9896 pertaining the harassment by the college managements. The decision has been taken by the Inter board after eight students studying in various corporate and non-corporate colleges committed suicide in the state in recent months.
The state government is facing severe criticism from the students and parents for not taking action on the colleges, which harass students for ranks and marks and subjecting them to enormous stress.
Intermediate Board appointed teams to carry out surprise checks and identify the colleges which harass students. Commissioner, Board of Intermediate Education, B Udaya Lakshmi, told The Hans India that the board had levied Rs 50 lakh penalty on each college for the suicides this academic year.
She said four students committed suicide in Narayana junior colleges and four in Chaitanya junior colleges. She said these eight colleges have to pay penalty to the government for subjecting the students to the stress.
Udaya Lakshmi said the government was planning to cancel the registrations of the colleges from the next academic year for harassing students. If the board takes action now in the middle of the year, the students would suffer, she added.
She said they had received more than 60 complaints from students and were conducting inquiry into them. Efforts were on to conduct special counselling classes with personality development trainers to reduce the stress among the students and prevent suicides in the state, she added.
She felt that yoga and meditation would be helpful in reducing the stress among the students. She pointed out that the aim of the government was stress-free education for students in the state and Intermediate Board was also keeping a vigil on the colleges, which violates basic rules and subject students to stress.
