Nellore: District Congress Committee (DCC) has demanded the state government to release water from Kandaleru to Swarnamukhi barrage for protecting crops in some mandals of Gudur division.

DCC President Dr Panabaka Krishnaiah organised a meeting with the farmers of Kota, Vakadu, Chittamuru, Chillakuru and Gudur mandals at Indira Bhavan on Tuesday demanding release of water from Telugu Ganga Reservoir to Swarnamukhi barrage for protecting crops in Gudur Assembly segment.

After completion of the meeting, a delegation of 50 farmers under leadership of Krishnaiah met District Collector Mutyala Raju in the afternoon and submitted a memorandum for immediate release of water for irrigation needs.

Krishnaiah brought to the notice of the Collector that crops were not growing properly due to scanty water resources for the last 2 years in the mandals. He explained that this year there has been less rainfall in the district and the farmers of Kota, Vakadu, and Chittamuru mandals have sown paddy in 15,000 acres in the Swarnamukhi barrage area.

As water resources are limited there is an immediate need to provide water for farm needs, he stated. Now, water level in Somasila reservoir is around 40 tmcft and in Kandaluru it is around 18 tmcft and some quantity of water to be released to the farmers of Gudur Assembly constituency for irrigation needs. If water is not released within 3 to 4 days, the DCC chief warned that the farmers would launch an agitation.
