Vijayawada: The Revenue department is holding discussions with the farmers of Vemavaram village which is very near to Jakkampudi village on the outskirts of Vijayawada to acquire nearly 300 acres of land for construction of houses under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana’ (PMAY) scheme. It has decided to give 40 percent of the land to farmers after developing the infrastructure facilities.

The State Government will use 60 percent of the land for construction of houses, community halls and parks on the land. Both the State and Central Governments will give subsidy to the beneficiaries.

The officials of the Revenue Department paid a visit to the Vemavaram village, which is situated between Vijayawada-Mylavaram and held discussions with them on the issue of land pooling. Some local TDP leaders are also trying to mediate between the Revenue Department and the villagers so that the Government’s objective will be realised.

Moreover, the villagers will also be benefited under the land pooling scheme. Earlier, more than 8,000 houses were constructed in the YSR colony in Jakkampudi under the JNNURM scheme under the UPA rule.

The Central Government had allotted 28,152 houses to Vijayawada city under the PMAY and housing as part of ‘Housing for All’ (HFA) scheme. So far, the VMC has already owns land for construction of 10,000 houses in Jakkampudi village and construction of another 2,000 houses in other parts of the city. Now, the civic body needs land for construction of 16,128houses near Vijayawada city.

Due to lack of government lands in the city, the VMC is trying to get lands in the nearby villages. Municipal Commissioner J Nivas recently told the Municipal Council that the VMC needs land for construction of 16,128 houses under the PMAY scheme.

The revenue department is not willing to pay huge amount of compensation to farmers for acquiring the land, said a revenue official, who is taking part in the discussions with the villagers. He said the land pooling was a better option for both the government and farmers.

He opined that the city was developing and spreading towards Jakkampudi because land prices were very low in that area compared to other villages like Gollapudi, Poranki and Nunna.

Moreover, adequate quantities of water will be available due to the passing of Polavaram canals near Jakkampudi and Vemavaram villages. The Government is planning to construct G+7 buildings for the beneficiaries under the PMAY scheme.
