Much before Sankranthi, some parts of north Andhra Pradesh and a few places in Godavari delta are gearing up for cock fights. The organisers are getting their roosters for the big fight. Even though the courts have banned the sport, cock fights are arranged and organised in rural interiors much with the connivance of the police and political leaders.

Even though the courts have banned the sport, cock fights are arranged and organised in rural interiors much with the connivance of the police and political leaders.

Since the sport is a part of the festival, no action is usually taken against the organisers as several political hands are involved in it.

Bhimavaram in West Godavari district is one place where cock fighting is held with much vigour and enthusiasm. There are 50 varieties of roosters are in existence. The price of roosters begins from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh. Usually, to make the roosters ready for the battle on Sankranthi, organisers feed them with protein diet like cashew, almonds, mutton, pearl millet and revital tablets for strength.
