Nellore: As many as 453 fatal road accidents had occurred during 2016 and they are 401 this year. In 2016, the total accidents recorded were 1,511 and this year they are only 1,367. At a meeting held at Umesh Chandra Conference hall here on Thursday, the Superintendent of Police PHD Ramakrishna disclosed the annual crime scenario.

He said that 1,018 non-fatal cases were registered in 2016 whereas 918 cases were registered this year. “Rate of accidents had decreased significantly for the last three months across the district due to efforts by the district police, who have been conducting special drives on road safety especially on the national highways,” the SP said.

The police had recovered 53.21 per cent of property in connection with several offences that took place in 2017 as against 45 per cent last year. According to the SP, 683 property offence cases were booked and 645 accused, including 17 gangs were arrested. Last year, 1,049 cases pertaining to crime against women were registered and the number is 877 this year.

Meanwhile, 263 cases recorded in 2016 under SC/ST Atrocities Act and 200 cases in 2017. The SP said that police arrested 365 accused in connection with cricket betting cases. He further stated 201 cases were booked regarding silica sand scam in the district and arrested 287 accused and seized 247 vehicles from them.

The SP explained that task force team was formed to curb the smuggling of red sanders logs in the district. District police had bagged ABCD Award for exhibiting good performance under Best Crime Detection category for detecting a rape and murder case that occurred in Budanam village of Chillakur mandal on July 14, 2017. Additional SP B Sarath Babu, OSD T P Vitaleswar and other police officials were present.
