Nellore: Excise department is on cloud nine as it would be getting around 50 per cent extra liquor sale this year. The trend indicates that 19 per cent of increase in sales by December 1 when compared to the last year and it would cross the targeted sales.

Even as the Excise department is expressing happiness over increase in revenue to the state exchequer there would be significant impact on livelihoods of the poor with the consumption of liquor this year.

Nellore population has spent around Rs 836.63 crore this year up to December 1. The consumption was around Rs 697.52 crore between April 1 and November 1, 2016. In 2017, liquor consumption was Rs 836.63 crore from April 1 to November 1 this year. The Excise department gave permission to 199 shops in Nellore and 151 shops in Gudur.

The department had achieved 2.24 per cent of growth in IML sales and 10.86 per cent growth in beer sales. Meanwhile, there is an increase in consumption of liquor in rural areas as Gudur division has recorded 29.4 per cent growth when compared to Nellore division which confined to 14.43 per cent of growth.

According to officials, 22.12 lakh cases of IML and 11.91 lakh cases of beer were sold in 2013-14 fetching a revenue of Rs 874.17 crore. 22.35 lakh cases of IML and 11.52 lakh cases of beer were sold in 2014-15 achieving revenue of Rs 894.15 crore. Similarly, 22.73 lakh cases of beer and 11.42 lakh cases of IML was sold in 2015-16 earning a revenue of Rs 955.44 crore.

In 2016-17, 23.23 lakh cases of IML and 12.66 lakh cases of beer were sold out and the revenue was Rs 1,001.67 crore. 15.89 lakh cases of IML and 10.08 lakh cases of beer were sold out earning a revenue of Rs 836.63 crore between April 1 and November 1 this year. In fact, there are two Excise divisions in the district such as Gudur and Nellore.

Interesting aspect of this year was majority people from rural areas are spending their money on enjoying beer. Youth from rural areas have also addicted to consume beer this year when compared to last year.

Excise staff have been discharging their duties to reach their targets fixed by the higher authorities. Normally, the Excise staff that includes head constable, Sub-Inspector, and Circle Inspector check status on percentage of sales in their respective area.

If any shop fails to reach the target, the Excise staff enquire with the owner about the issues that are affecting sales. They mount pressure on the owners of the shops to increase sales and also to purchase the IML and beer from the Excise depots.
