Visakhapatnam: Crime rate in Visakhapatnam rural district is on the wane in 2017, thanks to information technology and advanced electronic equipment. Disclosing about the crime rate, recoveries and road accidents at a press conference here on Thursday, Superintendent of Police Visakhapatnam Rual District Rahul Dev Sharma said that digital communication techniques helped the police in controlling the crime.

The technologies based policing like e-Beat, CCTV survivelance at all the rural police stations, Global Positioning System (GPS) in the beat vehicles, Locked House Monitoring System(LHMS) and Social Network helped the police in curbing the crimes in 2017, he pointed out.

Talking about road accidents, the Superintendent of Police said that 336 cases of fatal road accidents were reported so far against 347 cases in 2016. Out of 336 accidents, 357 persons died and 1,183 were injured. Police had identified 22 black spots on the 73 km long National Highway and had taken safety measures, including night alert to the drivers and deployed highway mobile vehicles for every 100 metres.

As many as 245 cases of property offense have been reported so far, of which 129 cases have been detected. Taking stringent action against the ganja smugglers for the first time, properties of two smugglers were attached during the year.

As many as 785 accused were arrested and seized 3,1613 kg of ganja this year. As many as four check posts have been established to check ganja transportation. In association with the prohibition and excise and revenue departments over 4,000 acres of ganja crop was destroyed. Over 15 PD Act cases were registered against 15 ganja smugglers, the Rural Superintendent of Police explained.

Talking about the excise cases, the Superintendent of Police said that as many 329 cases have been registered and 7,977 liquor bottles and 854 litres of arrack worth of Rs 9,41,429 was seized during year. With the introduction of the e-Challan, there was no direct currency transaction with the department.

Talking about the Maoists activities in the district, the Superintendent of Police said while continuing combing operations, the department has been educating the tribals on all the aspects. “The entire district, including agency, is under peaceful atmosphere.

During the year a large number of Maoists and sympathisers were surrendered before the police. Two more cell towers will be erected at Korukonda and Peddabailli areas for better communication between the forces,” Rahul Dev Sharma said.
