Anantapur: An all-party meeting was held under the leadership of the Left parties and YSRCP leaders at the local Press Club demanded the Centre to make the Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) applicable to the groundnut crop which is the principal crop of the district.

Rythu Sangam district president C Mallikarjuna, who presided over the meeting called for a joint struggle by all Opposition parties to pressurise the central and state governments to implement the scheme for groundnut farmers from the coming Kharif season.

Addressing political parties and farmers organisations, YSRCP state general secretary Anantha Venkatarama Reddy said non-application of the PMFBY to groundnut crop as irrational and unjustified.

He demanded that the central government take steps to relax the norms of taking the average productivity of the crop for a 5-year period in order to make it applicable for the crop.

In 2016, the YSRCP leader said that the farmers, state and central governments had together paid a premium of Rs 468 crore and the insurance paid to the farmers was worth Rs 419 crore. He maintained that the central government had implemented the scheme through a private company which did injustice to farmers.

He regretted that the Centre was more interested in protecting the interests of corporate companies than the farmers. CPI district secretary D Jagadish alleged that the BJP-led NDA government had handed over PMFBY to corporate companies for implementation.
